"I don't draw a strict dividing line between the two aspects of my music. It's a working life, and when I find myself at my writing desk every day, whether it's for a film or a commissioned piece, in terms of the working day it's really, dare I say, all the same thing. I understand how Miklós Rózsa felt when he described his career as a 'double life', but I don't think in my life I've felt quite that divided up. There is these days a different psychology about film music in the wider musical community compared to the mentality in the period when Rózsa was active. I'm not so young any more, but many of the young composers of today are interested in film and most of them are willing to consider giving at least some of their time to film composition. [...] I'm as painfully aware of visual distractions and how they can detract from the pure art of music as anyone else, but I think we all need to be aware that writing for film is going to be part of what composers of the future do." —John Williams
The Legacy of John Williams Editor-in-Chief Maurizio Caschetto was kindly invited by the super-passionate Luke Bugg @thegeekofsteel to be guest on his terrific Superman podcast show.
‘I have been very fortunate; I can’t say I was “mentored” by people like Bernard Herrmann and Alfred Newman, but in retrospect they befriended me; they would ask me to their homes for dinner and I didn’t think about any of it. I took it all pretty much in my stride. I worked as a pianist for these composers and some of them would begin to ask me to orchestrate things, which I could do, and eventually write scores for television shows. I don’t think I can say it was something I always wanted to do; it was just part of an evolution, a series of good luck turns. I can’t say to you that aged 22 I wanted to be a film composer; I didn’t have aspirations that high, frankly. I was interested in piano, I’d studied it, and was a fairly good pianist and a reasonably good sight reader – which helped in the studio work. I was blessed with a kind of luck and, fortunately, I was able to do the work when it came along. But it was not part of a plan or an ambition of mine. I simply put one foot in front of the other.’
