The collaboration between John Williams and Steven Spielberg is probably the longest and most successful artistic relationship between a director and a composer in the history of cinema. The duo is synonymous of what means having a fruitful, honest and profound association between two people making films together. Calendar year 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of the very first encounter between Spielberg and Williams, which happened when the director was in preparation of his first feature film, The Sugarland Express; after being impressed by Williams’ work for such films as The Reivers and The Cowboys, the director decided he was the type of composer he was looking for. The rest, as the saying goes, is history.

Steven Spielberg and John Williams in the late 1970s

The Spielberg/Williams collaboration spans now six decades, 29 feature films (including the upcoming The Fabelmans, which will premiere at the 47th edition of the Toronto Film Festival in September) and several special projects, so it’s virtually impossible to sum it up in a few words. Their roster includes some of the most successful and everlasting movies in the history of cinema: Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, but also such highly acclaimed dramas as Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Munich and Lincoln. The variety and diversity of their collaboration is balanced by a unified artistic vision that always celebrates humanity, finding the perfect synergy and constant inspiration in the work of each other and letting each other to be part of their own respective worlds. “John is my musical rewrite artist,” said Steven Spielberg, while Williams spoke of Spielberg as someone who “loves music, it is such a pleasure working with him. He comes in and I play him a theme, he is always very positive and enjoys it.”

Soundtrack label La-La Land Records has recently reissued three classic John Williams scores from the Spielberg canon: Jurassic Park, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. If the latter two are straight reissues of the previous 2-disc releases from 2018 now happily back in print, Jurassic Park offers a reissue of the complete score program as presented in the 2016 boxset with a few corrections and improvements (including the film versions of “Journey to the Island” and “Dennis Steals the Embryo”), plus a remastered presentation of the 1993 MCA original soundtrack album. In addition to these reissues, La-La Land Records will soon have back in stock their editions of Empire of the Sun, Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.

Soundtrack Producer Mike Matessino returns to The Legacy of John Williams podcast to offer commentary on these three classic Spielberg/Williams collaborations, while also offering an in-depth overall reflection on the partnership between the composer and the director. Matessino is joined by Maurizio Caschetto and Tim Burden in a 2+ hour talk analyzing some of Spielberg’s stylistic trademarks and underlying themes in his filmography, how Williams accompanies them with his own brilliant scores and how the director and the composer have found their special alchemy together and renewed it throughout the decades.

The Legacy of John Williams will continue to celebrate the Spielberg-Williams collaboration in the coming months with a special tribute piece. Stay tuned!
