Steven Spielberg & John Williams: Cinema of Dreams

A series of screenings and special events in collaboration with Cineteca Milano celebrating the partnership between Steven Spielberg and John Williams

The Legacy of John Williams is proud to announce its collaboration with Cineteca Milano for a series of screenings and special events celebrating the legendary partnership between composer John Williams and director Steven Spielberg, in the year of the composer’s 90th birthday and specifically for the Maestro’s extraordinary Italian debut concert with Milan’s Filarmonica della Scala orchestra coming December 12.

From November 6, 2022 to January 7, 2023, Cineteca Milano MIC (Museo Interattivo del Cinema) will host a festival dedicated to the films of Steven Spielberg with music by John Williams, a tribute in 18 films featuring the highlights of the collaboration between the legendary director and the 5-time Academy Award-winning composer—from such essential masterpieces as Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, up to their most recent collaborations including War Horse, The BFG and The Post, but also such beloved films such as Empire of the Sun, Hook, Always, Catch Me If You Can.

The retrospective will offer to Milanese audience the opportunity to appreciate the variety and uniqueness of the very long Spielberg-Williams collaboration, which this year celebrates 50 years of partnership and friendship: the first meeting between composer and director took place in the autumn of 1972, when Spielberg was about to start shooting his first feature film, The Sugarland Express, which will also be part of this festival. A.I. Artificial Intelligence, Hook and Jurassic Park will be presented in 35mm film from copies from the archives of Cineteca Milano.

The retrospective will be accompanied by a series of special events curated by The Legacy of John Williams in collaboration with Cineteca Milano:

5 video essays on the music of Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Raiders of the Lost Ark, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Jurassic Park will be shown before the screening of the related films: a series of “introduction to listening”, produced and curated by the staff of The Legacy of John Williams, which will give the tools to fully appreciate Williams’ masterful work when enjoying the film (see full press release below for calendar).

– On November 13th at 7.30 pm CET, Maurizio Caschetto (Founder & Editor-in-Chief of The Legacy of John Williams) will host a special introduction to the screening of Jaws with John Williams and Steven Spielberg – A Formidable Partnership, a brief historical and aesthetic overview of the artistic partnership between director and composer.

– On November 26 at 5.30 pm CET, editor Maurizio Caschetto will host Steven Spielberg and John Williams: Cinema of Dreams, a 2-hour workshop analyzing in detail the most famous and celebrated director/composer collaboration in the film history through a series of panels curated by some of the most renowned Italian experts and scholars on film music: film and music critic Roberto Pugliese (former professor of Film Music History courses at Università di Venezia and film critic for prestigious magazine SegnoCinema) and film theorist and film-musicologist Emilio Audissino (professor and researcher at Linnaeus University and author of The Film Music of John Williams, the first English-language book on the composer).

– On December 11, before the screening of the very first Steven Spielberg-John Williams collaboration The Sugarland Express, Marco Ferullo (Filarmonica della Scala Head of Press and Marketing) and Emilio Audissino will host a pre-concert talk presenting the program of the John Williams concert that will take place the following day at Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Readers and followers of The Legacy of John Williams will also have the chance to participate in a contest linked to the events. The modalities of participation will soon be announced on The Legacy of John Williams social media pages (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter).

The events will take place simultaneously with E.T. La Mostra – 1982-2022, an extraordinary and unique exhibition curated by Cineteca Milano, in collaboration with Fondazione Culturale Carlo Rambaldi, celebrating the 40th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece, which is being held at Cineteca Milano MIC from November 6, 2022 to January 31, 2023.
